END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have developed a range of skills on this module, especially when it comes to print processes, such as becoming more efficient on the laser cutter, learning how to foil and flock and learning how to emboss using the laser cutter. I feel I have applied these well to my project, because I had to go into detail on how to do these processes so I gained a stronger understanding of them. Because of this strong understanding I was able to produce a strong range of publications that explain the processes well. Another skill I have learned is to code which I feel I have developed on by reading HTML and CSS. This skill helped me to produce a whole website.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Methods of design production I have learned are foiling, flocking, laser cutting and embossing. These then helped me to produce 4 publications that help tell people how to do these processes. I have also learned how to code a website, this then helped me to produce a whole website that had roll over buttons and images placed on it. This would not of been achieved if I hadn’t learnt any coding.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Some strengths I feel I have are gained are laser cutting and foiling, I will capitalise on these by doing them more often and experimenting on different surfaces. Another strength I have gained is using grids more often, these have helped me so much in this project because they have aloud me to layout my website and my publications. I will capitalise on this by trying to use grids where possible for everything. Something else I feel is a strength is coding, where I have learnt so much in such a small amount of time, and I will start to build on this and see what else I can do with a website.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Some weakness I have found are that I don’t blog as a I go and so I start to become behind and don’t focus on my work in hand with enough attention. I will address this by being more organised and keeping track of my time. Another weakness I found was that some of the finishing techniques weren’t quite as a high quality as I wanted them to be, to address this I would be more prepared so I could create a load of different variations and select the best one, so if things went wrong I could then adjust it and do it again or scrap it altogether.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Blog as I go, this will leave me time to focus on my work

Organise time, have print slots booked ready so I can plan my time around them this then enforcing me to be more organised

Use different print methods, this will then give me and even better understanding of print and help me on my way to third year

Source my stock, this will then give me something I can work with a design around, I could then again experiment and see what works best for example making packaging.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Mutton Quad

Initial designs

To start off with i went on indesign and looked at all the glyphs for the typeface Zapfino, i then found one that had the initals of what the name was that i came up with Pica Pizzas.

These were the glyphs i looked at.

This is the selected glyph that looks a bit like PP, with a little editing it could look more like a PP.
This typeface works really well with the type of restaurant i am trying to create, it looks high end and and expensive.

This is the edited version below, i removed the crossbar from the P on the right and then made the counters wider so they had more definition

I then started to play around with this to create different logos.

These below have a pizza type object behind.

I then created a logo that could go on a shop front as the main name for the restaurant and the smaller logo isto go on such things as napkins or restaurant menus.

Working out pizza sizes

30 Picas = 5 inches
36 Picas = 6 inches
48 Picas = 8 inches
60 Picas = 10 inches
72 Picas = 12 inches
More development

I started off having this deep blue colour but i then had some feedback that it might look like pizza express so i then went away and looked at other colour choices.

First laser cuts
These coasters i feel look too boring and simple, also the raster was wrong and the thin lines were supposed to be much thicker! Also the wood doesn't have the correct grain, it wasn't rustic enough for the restaurant.
with my first laser cut of this placemat i firstly got the raster wrong so it created these pepsi looking semi circles over my design and the wood didnt have the grain i wanted, it was also far too big so i had to get it cut again.
Finished items

With the finished wood items i varnished them with some dark oak wood so they had a rustic look to them.

Coasters

these were my first attempts at rastering on to the wood, but as can be seen they didnt line up correctly so the logo didnt go across the 4 coasters. It also gives you a chance to see the wood before it was varnished.
