END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
EWAN NORTH

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills i have learned through this project are various ways of creating a publication and the process in creating this publication, such as layout and using the girds from the previous module in my publications. I have also learned how to use indesign, setting up layouts and placing my work in to organise the text. I have applied these to all of my work that i have done so far, it is also beneficial to have them on indesign when going to print.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

i was able to use different printing methods such as screen print and letterpress, i also was able to print on different paper which gave a different effect to the final outcome. These methods all helped me to produce a stronger final outcome that had a cleaner crisp finish. These methods have also allowed me to look at a range of different stocks and printing methods that i may not of looked at before.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Some strengths i have learned are layout and composition, these have been enhanced by the use of indesign where by it lets you create grids. I will capitalise on this by producing more work where by i can use layouts to get a well proportioned design. It will also lead me towards doing more publications such as books and leaflets ect.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Some weaknesses are that i didn't manage my time effectively, so i was rushed at the end and my final outcome wasn't as strong as it could have been, a way to get round this is that i could use a diary to plan my day/week, this then gives me something to aim for and keeps me on track and up to date.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     Organise my time more, this will allow me to not be rushed at the end and have a well defined produced end outcome.
2.     More analysis, this then gives me self evaluation on my work and I can look back and edit it to improve it, it also allows me to sit back and view my own work rather than critiquing others
3.     Blog as I go, this will allow me to have more time on my work and ill then be able to produce a stronger outcome.
4.     Get straight down to doing the work, again this is another form of organisation and will mean I wont be rushed near then end of the module.
5.     More experimentation, experimenting more will give a vast amount of work that I can look at and will have different ally’s I could head down with my work.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Speaking from expierence

Before writing our own brief we were given the general brief for the project, to produce something for the first years. My initial ideas are shown below.

We then wrote our own brief.

Brief

produce a graphic response/ graphic product/ piece of work that makes a statement, comment, observation, or gives advice about your experience on your first year of this course.

Work with any appropriate media or format and develop and identify the content, will it be entertaining, advisory or informative

Background/ Considerations

Think about the new experiences that you have had, the difficulties that you have overcome and the new people you have met and the life skills you have acquired this year.

After being given this brief we were given a blank brief to fill in, this would allow us to decide on what we wanted to do and how we were going to go about doing it.

CONCEPT

The concept i choose to do was, that it was firstly going to be a publication. My idea is to produce a map that will provide the essential places to visit in Leeds, for example, shops, bars, clubs, food, printing. The map will also include things like design studios and links to blogs. Each essential place will have a illustration/picture along side it. As well as having a blog along side it providing information on these places.

Everything

After revealing to the class what my idea was i produced 3 design boards on what i was going to do.

Firstly the CONCEPT

Secondly the METHOD OF DELIVERY

Thirdly the DESIGN PRODUCTION

After deciding on what i wanted to do i looked at a few different ways in which i could make the maps and the information to go with it. I felt like a book wouldn't be very useful, and something that can be carried around and unfolded would be a lot more practical.

I next decided on some things that i could put on the map and how the information might look.  Also looking at the colours that i placed on the design board and other colours that i might use.

To Start i went round Leeds taking pictures of all the destinations i wanted to look at.

MOCK UP OF HOT DOG BOOK.

Splits into 8 sections

THORNTON ARCADE

Town Hall

CORN EXCHANGE

Grande Theater

City Varieties Music Hall

Leeds College Of Art

Leeds Met

Morrison

Trinity

Harvey Nichols

Victoria Quarter

TRINITY

Train Station

LEEDS MARKET

Corn Exchange

I then started to collect information on the different places. Also getting the map ready by looking on google maps to see what areas id like to cover, thinking about the size and where people might actually go.

THE MAP

This is the area of land i want to cover. It covers the town center, uni, living accommodation.

This was the first map i did, but i felt the area was too small unlike the one above.

I then used the bigger map and started to fill in the shapes.

This is the map with every section coloured in.

Although i feel this looks strong it was hard to change the colour of the lines on the map because i wanted them to have a dark grey colour. I was also thinking that i might want to extend and shorten some lines, which again would be difficult when they are drawn like this.
So i started to use the original map again to trace the correct lines.

After doing this extremely long process the lines had been finished.

Next adding the type.

I chose a typeface that was easily readable for both the web and print, it could easily be seen when small as well.

I picked Mybrid pro which worked very well across the 3 things i mentioned.

After this i then coloured in the parks and the river.

The three maps that i am going to do are Places To Visit, Shopping and Clubs.

Places to visit.

Shopping

Clubs

With this map i think i will screen print or print onto Antique paper depending on time.

THE BACK OF THE MAP

With the information i gathered i started off creating some layouts.

I inserted dotted lines so it would be easier to to fold when it came to making it.

i then started to make the drawing that i showed earlier.

this is the layout i am going to use across each rectangle.

This is the back of the clubs map.

I then created all the backs like this but in different colours depending on what i was showing.

MOCK UP

When it came to print them it didnt go to plan, becasue when i folded it the front cover was the wrong way round and when it was read like a book the pages weren't in order. So what i had to do was flip one half of the information round. As shown below.

We also had a crit at this point and people said that the map was too big and the images looked like they were just placed there, also they said to change the colour of the text on the green parks to Black so it was more readable. My crit group also said i could maybe create a belly band to hold the maps together.

For the design of the cyan and blue backs i used my images that i had taken of all the places to create little icons that sit on the bottom right of each section. After my crit i decided to change the opacity of the icons in the bottom right to make them stand out less.

CREATING THE SLEEVE

to make the sleeve i firstly used the mock up earlier of a hot dog book that was the same size and then made a mock up sleeve.

This mock up heloed me to get the exact dimensions of the sleeve.

I then decided to do a logo that resembled a guide, so the first thing that came to mind was a compass, i used this and put the name of the blog for them to visit around it. I also used the colour that i used for the roads on the map so it had continuity.

On wordpress i then created a blog that the students can go on and look at events for the clubs to buy tickets and also events that might be happening in the shopping centres.
