InDesign - Part 2

When a illustrator file is placed it places a very low resolution image. But when it comes to print Indesign finds the full high quality image to replace it.

When saving a indesign file that has a image, the image must always be available for indesign to source it. If a image hasn't been saved then when you open up the file a little red hexagon with a question mark appears telling you that although the preview of the image is there it wont be able to source the original image when printing.

The reason indesign does this is too keep the file manageable and easy to work with, if it didn't do this images transferred across would be too large.

If the quality of the image matters it can be changed by going on view, display performance then high quality.

To view all the information on the image if you look to the right of the indesign screen there is a links button.

Preparing a Photoshop image

Firstly i edited the default to opening a image from indesign to Photoshop to edit images

openeing a image from indesign to photoshop - hold alt and double click the image or.....

next in photoshop the image has to be changed to CMYK for print and the size of the image has to be the same.

Because indesign works with percent this has to be changed on Photoshop, the percent on indesign was 33.5 so this is what its changed to on Photoshop after the measurements are changed to percent.

A image that has been cut out can also be moved to indesign, it firstly has to be saved as a Photoshop file so all the layers are saved, this can then be moved over to indesign by file place then selecting the Photoshop file.

A handy tool in design when viewing what you want to print you can just select W key to show just what will be printed.
The key can be edited at the bottom left of the screen,

When placing a image on text you can have the text wrap around the image, this is done by going on windows, Text wrap.

The image can then be placed on the text and selecting the wrap around bonding box the text wraps around the image.

Adding the 6mm allows there to be space around the image so the text isn't directly against it.

Text wrap can also go around a cut out image, this is done by going on wrap around object shape, then going to type - alpha channel.

Text can also be changed by creating a shape and having it form around the side of that shape, such as a circle

Text can also be placed into ant shape, done by creating a shape the type- fill with placeholder text.

When adding colour it is very similar to using illustrator, using colour swatches. These allow you to change the outline of a text box, the colour of the text, the colour of a shape, to fill a shape.

This is the menu for colour swatches where all the colour changes can take place. As can be seen the stroke and fill can be altered, as can the text.

A new colour swatch can be created by going on the drop down menu  then new colour swatch. Then by changing the cyan, magenta, yellow and black you can create any colour.

When Printing

Press quality - best quality for commercial print
Smallest file size - good if its just being sent to somebody who doesn't want to print it out
High quality - good to print out for uni printers but not quite good enough for commercial print
