Re writing the brief

Today we had a session with Lorraine, we had to bring in a set of briefs selected from the ISTD website, from ether 2009, 2010 and 2011.
After looking through the briefs i selected 4 that i thought i would enjoy doing, 10 things you should know about, TypeFactory, Mutton Quad and On Yer Bike.

We then were asked to circle words that we thought were important on all of our briefs.

Lorianne then went through with us saying some of these words were pointless and not helpful at all, for a example one word that she went through with us was 'interesting', to make something 'interesting', but who is to define what is interesting, what i find interesting someone else will find it completely different.

Re writing the brief

We were then asked questions on what we thought about the brief, these would then narrow down the brief and see if it was actually well written. Some of these questions would be difficult to answer and maybe getting 5 examples for each would be hard, if this was the case then we would know how hard it would be to do this brief.

they were:

5 things i know about the brief
  • Open brief with a large scope
  • Sport is active
  • Healthy way of living
  • Publication any size or format
  • Keeping active helps give you a positive attitude
  • Games make you think, make your brain active
  • Web and print

5 Facts about the audience
  • Teens onwards
  • Sport, active people
  • Healthy way of living people
  • Go to the gym a lot
  • Gardening, like to be outdoors
  • Like the environment

5 Things i want to communicate
  • !0 things about about the subject
  • educating the audience on the subject matter
  • Facts figures statisitcs
  • Whats interesting about the subject

5 things i dont know about the brief
  • Who the audience is
  • Dont know the Dewey Decimal System is
  • The choice of topic and how to narrow the audience down

5 Problems i want to solve
  • How to categorize the information
  • How to inform the user
  • What audience i want

 And how?
  • Through the use of a range of publications
  • Research subject matter
  • Other information material

After doing this i got a better understanding of the brief and started to get very confused with it, although they say audience is teens onwards a lot of them selected topics will have a lot of different audiences such as gardening which will have a much older one, also there asking for 10 things about the subject which may be hard to make into other things apart from a publication.
And so i have decided to change it to another brief where i fell like ill have more interest in it.

Mutton Quad

Answering the same questions:

5 things i know about the brief

  • Its a food restaurant
  • typographically informed
  • Create the exterior and the interior
  • Mutton is from a sheep
  • Print and screen
  • create a visual identity

5 Facts about the audience
  • Must be into food
  • Must be into going out for food at restaurants
  • Maybe into Graphic Design or at least an interest in type

5 Things i want to communicate

  • A visual experience
  • Typography
  • Something different, a different eating experience
  • The various ways typography can be used

5 things i dont know about the brief
  • Doesnt specify a target audience, left to do that ourselves
  • The materials i have to produce
  • Where the restaurant will be (location)
  • The food it has in there
  • The drinks it has
  • Any aspect of the interior/exterior

5 Problems i want to solve  And how?
  • How the exterior/interior is going to look, Look at other restaurants take pictures
  • The target audience i want to aim it at, decide on place to have the restaurant this will then narrow my audience down and then what food will be in the restaurant will also narrow this down
  • The location think about where would suit this type of restaurant,
  • How it will be different to other restaurants, look into different experiences that the person could have with the restaurant
  • Clever use of words, look at typographical words and how these might be adapted to food and a restaurant, and also how it can be used around the restaurant.

Re writing the brief

The Brief Title

The Brief

Considerations
The area in which the restaurant will be placed
How typography can be used on a larger format
How typography can be used on a much smaller format, menus, costars ect
The visual material that can be produced
How it can be promoted

Concept/Proposition
To propose a restaurant that creates a unique experience for the visitor through the use of type, with the table they sit at the menu they read and floor the see, the lights, the toilets ect. To then create a brand that works well typographically and can be used across a number of different types of material. Also how it can then be transferred to web.
